Airport Pickup Guide: Agadir Al Massira Airport

Terminal layout, where to find your rental desk, shuttle logistics, documents and tips for collecting your car at Agadir Al Massira (AGA).

Agadir Al Massira Airport (IATA code AGA) is the main gateway to Morocco's Atlantic coast and the easiest place to collect a rental car. It's a compact, single-terminal airport about 22 km southeast of central Agadir, in the town of Al Massira. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect, from the moment you exit arrivals to the moment you drive off the lot.

Terminal layout

Al Massira has one passenger terminal handling both international and domestic flights. After passport control and baggage claim, you'll pass through a small customs area and exit into the public arrivals hall. The layout is simple: a row of car rental counters sits along the left-hand wall as you exit, a café and ATMs are on the right, and the taxi rank is directly outside the main doors.

You won't get lost. The airport handles around 2.5 million passengers a year, and the whole building can be walked end-to-end in under three minutes.

Finding your rental desk

Major international brands (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Sixt) have dedicated counters in the arrivals hall. Smaller local companies — which typically offer significantly better prices — often don't keep a permanent desk. Instead, a representative meets you in arrivals holding a sign with your name or the company logo.

Before you land, confirm the pickup process in your booking email. If a meet-and-greet is arranged, the representative will usually be waiting within five minutes of your scheduled arrival time. If you can't spot them, call the emergency number on your booking voucher — Moroccan SIMs are cheap at the Maroc Telecom or Inwi kiosks in the arrivals hall, and the airport has free Wi-Fi.

Shuttle to the rental lot

Rental cars are not parked directly outside the terminal. Most companies keep their fleets in a lot a short distance from arrivals. Depending on the company, you'll either:

  • Walk 2–3 minutes to an adjacent parking area with your agent, or
  • Be driven 5 minutes by shuttle to an off-airport compound.

Off-airport compounds are common with independent rental companies. The shuttle is free, the trip is quick, and you'll do the paperwork in an air-conditioned office rather than in the terminal. Either way, allow 30–45 minutes from plane landing to driving off once you factor in passport control and baggage.

Documents and deposit

At the rental desk, have the following ready:

  • Driving licence, held for at least 1–2 years
  • Passport
  • The credit card used for booking — debit cards are sometimes accepted but usually only for basic cover
  • Booking voucher, printed or on your phone

A security deposit is placed on your credit card as a pre-authorisation — typically 3,000–10,000 MAD (around €300–€1,000), depending on the vehicle category. It's released when you return the car undamaged with the agreed fuel level. Ask the agent to confirm the amount in writing on your rental agreement.

Inspecting the car

This is the single most important step of the entire pickup. Before you sign the handover sheet:

  1. Walk slowly around the car with the agent and photograph every panel, including the roof, wheels and bumpers.
  2. Note every scratch, dent and stone chip on the diagram. Don't accept "it's already marked" as a reason to skip it.
  3. Check the tyres, including the spare, for tread and sidewall damage.
  4. Test the lights, wipers, and air conditioning before you leave the lot.
  5. Confirm the fuel level matches the agreement — most rentals are full-to-full.
  6. Locate the vehicle documents (grise, green insurance card) in the glove box.

Take a short video clip of the whole car with timestamps. This simple habit has saved travellers thousands of dirhams in disputed damage charges on return.

After-hours and late arrivals

Al Massira handles flights into the early hours, especially in peak season. Most rental companies offer 24-hour pickup at no extra charge, but a few charge a small after-hours fee (typically 150–300 MAD) for flights arriving between midnight and 06:00. Confirm this when you book.

If your flight is delayed, message your rental company as soon as you have signal — most will track your flight automatically, but a quick update avoids missed connections.

Tips before you drive off

  • Set up navigation before you leave the lot. Google Maps and Waze both work well in Morocco, but cellular reception drops on some mountain roads.
  • Change some cash at the airport ATM for toll booths and parking attendants. Small bills (20, 50 MAD) are most useful.
  • Drive straight into central Agadir via the N10, a fast, well-marked dual carriageway. It takes about 25 minutes to the beachfront.
  • Fill up at the first Afriquia or Shell station you pass before heading for the coast — city stations are slightly cheaper than the ones nearest the airport.

With a little preparation, picking up your car at Al Massira is quick and painless. Within an hour of landing, you can be cruising the Corniche with the windows down and the Atlantic on your right.
