Agadir Car Rental FAQ: 15 Common Questions Answered

Everything first-time visitors ask about renting a car in Agadir — documents, age limits, insurance, cross-border rentals, payment and more.

Renting a car in Agadir isn't complicated, but there are plenty of small details that catch first-timers out. We pulled together the fifteen questions we hear most often from readers — covering documents, age limits, insurance, payment and the practical realities of driving in Morocco. If your question isn't answered below, get in touch and we'll add it.

How we wrote this FAQ

Every answer here comes from direct experience renting cars in Agadir over the last three years and from reader questions submitted through the site. Prices, fees and deposit amounts are checked against current rates at the major Agadir agencies (Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Medloc and several independents) and updated when we notice changes on the ground.

Car rental is one of those markets where the same question can have slightly different answers at two different counters in the same airport. Where we've seen meaningful variation, we've said so. Where the answer is genuinely universal — for example, what documents you need at a police check — we've stated it plainly.

Still have a question?

If something isn't covered here, our longer guides go into more depth on specific topics: driving rules and road conditions, picking up at the airport, how insurance actually works, and the best day trips from Agadir. Between the five guides and the FAQs below, most travellers find everything they need to book with confidence.

Preguntas frecuentes

What documents do I need to rent a car in Agadir?

You need a valid driving licence (held for at least 1 year, ideally 2), a passport, and the credit card used for the booking. An International Driving Permit is not legally required for most Western nationalities but is strongly recommended as a French or Arabic translation of your home licence, in case of police checks.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Morocco?

Most agencies in Agadir set the minimum age at 21, with the driver having held a licence for at least 1 year. Drivers under 25 are often charged a 'young driver' surcharge of 50–150 MAD per day. Luxury and 4x4 categories typically require drivers to be 25 or older.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Morocco accepts licences from most countries in Latin script (EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, etc.) without an IDP, as long as your licence is valid and in English, French or Arabic. If your licence is in Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese or another non-Latin script, an IDP is required. Either way, bringing an IDP costs little and avoids arguments at police checkpoints.

Can I pay for my rental in cash?

You can usually pay the rental balance in cash (MAD or euros), but the security deposit must be placed on a credit card as a pre-authorisation. Debit cards and prepaid cards are rarely accepted for the deposit because they cannot hold a pre-authorisation. Always clarify payment terms before you book.

Can I do a one-way rental from Agadir to Marrakech or Casablanca?

Yes. Most agencies in Agadir offer one-way rentals to Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes, Tangier and even Essaouira. A one-way fee (typically 500–1,500 MAD) applies and varies by destination and vehicle category. Book at least a week ahead for best availability.

Can I drive the rental car to Spain or the Moroccan Sahara?

Crossing into Spain via the Ceuta or Melilla enclaves is almost never permitted. Driving south into Morocco's Sahara provinces (past Guelmim toward Laayoune and Dakhla) is allowed by most companies but must be declared at pickup — some require extra paperwork and a higher deposit. Never attempt an undeclared border crossing; your insurance will be void.

Is automatic or manual transmission more common in Agadir?

Manual transmission is the default in Morocco and is 20–40% cheaper than automatic. Automatics are available from all major agencies but in limited numbers, especially in the economy and compact categories. If you need an automatic, book several weeks in advance.

Is it cheaper to pick up my car at the airport or in the city?

City pickups — downtown Agadir, the marina, or a hotel delivery — are often 10–20% cheaper than Al Massira Airport because airport concessions carry a fee. If you arrive late or only need the car for part of your trip, a downtown pickup can save real money. Taxis from the airport to central Agadir cost around 250–300 MAD.

Do I need to tip fuel attendants?

Tipping is not mandatory, but a small tip of 2–5 MAD when the attendant cleans your windscreen or checks tyre pressure is appreciated. For a simple fill-up, no tip is expected.

Should I use GPS or my phone for navigation?

A phone is usually the better choice. Google Maps and Waze both work well in Morocco and include live traffic in Agadir, Marrakech and Casablanca. Download an offline map of the Souss-Massa region before you leave town, as cellular signal drops on some mountain and desert roads. Paid GPS units from rental agencies typically cost 70–100 MAD per day and are no more accurate.

Are child seats available?

Yes. Most agencies rent infant, toddler and booster seats for 40–70 MAD per day, with a maximum charge often capped at around 500 MAD per rental. Reserve in advance, as stock is limited in peak season. Under Moroccan law, children under 10 should travel in the back seat.

What fuel policy should I choose?

The fairest policy is 'full-to-full' — you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. Avoid 'full-to-empty' policies, where you pay upfront for a tank and get no refund for unused fuel; these cost significantly more per litre than local fuel stations.

What happens if I'm stopped at a police checkpoint?

Routine checks on the N1, N8 and mountain routes are common and nothing to worry about. Slow down, greet the officer politely, and have your licence, rental agreement and passport ready. Most checks take under two minutes. If you're fined for a genuine violation (speeding, seatbelt, phone), pay on the spot and always ask for a receipt.

What do I do if the car breaks down?

Call the emergency number on your rental voucher immediately — most agencies offer 24/7 roadside assistance across Morocco. Stay with the vehicle if it's safely off the road, and do not attempt repairs yourself. If the breakdown is due to a covered mechanical failure, the agency will bring a replacement vehicle, usually within 2–4 hours on main routes.

What's the cancellation policy on an Agadir car rental?

Most reputable agencies in Agadir allow free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. Some bargain brokers charge a cancellation fee or are non-refundable — always check the terms before you book. If your travel is uncertain, look specifically for 'free cancellation' at checkout.
